“Our twenty year partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District and Regional Occupational Programs has been a valuable resource for “planting the seed” and introducing students to the increasing career opportunities in health care. More than 500 students have participated in the program since it began in 1993. The Youth Employment and Development (YED) program provides mentoring and hospital work experience to junior & senior Fairfax High School students who receive high school credits and a paycheck for working in departments around the medical center. A recent program evaluation showed YED/ROP built confidence and prepared students to pursue higher education and careers. Nearly all YED/ROP graduates complete high school and go on to college, and more than two-thirds pursue a health-related field of study. Many choose careers in healthcare-and some eventually return to Cedars-Sinai in roles such as nurse, research assistant and physical therapy aide.”
